Wagashi & Ikebana Workshop

The day after Japan Tag in Düsseldorf was filled with excitement and cultural immersion at our Wagashi & Ikebana workshop. Participants gathered to explore the art of making traditional Japanese sweets and floral arrangements. Here’s a glimpse of the wonderful day we shared.

Part One: Making Yokan

Our workshop began with the creation of yokan, a traditional Japanese confection made from red bean paste, agar, and sugar. Yokan has a jelly-like texture and is often enjoyed with green tea. Participants were guided through the process, learning how to mix the ingredients and pour them into molds.

Step-by-Step Yokan Making

Mixing Ingredients: We started by mixing red bean paste with water and sugar, heating the mixture until smooth. Adding Agar: Agar, a natural gelling agent, was added to the mixture to give yokan its firm texture. Pouring into Molds: Once mixed thoroughly, the sweet mixture was poured into molds to set.

Part Two: Creating Ikebana

While waiting for the yokan to set, we moved on to the Ikebana workshop. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, focusing on harmony, balance, and simplicity. Our workshop taught participants how to create beautiful arrangements without the need for a kenzan (a traditional spiked holder).

Simple Ikebana Techniques:

Choosing Flowers: Participants selected a variety of flowers and branches, considering color and form. Arranging without Kenzan: Using creative techniques, such as intertwining stems and using the natural weight of flowers, participants created balanced and elegant arrangements. Finishing Touches: Final adjustments were made to ensure each arrangement had the desired shape and flow.

Taking Home the Creations

At the end of the workshop, everyone was thrilled to take home their homemade yokan and beautifully crafted Ikebana. It was a delightful day of learning and creativity, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture.
